The Quietened Bunker – A Gathering Of Transmissions

Transmissions sent, received, transmitted:

Well, there have been a fair few The Quietened Bunker broadcasts and related scribings.

Below is a selection or two of such things.

the-gated-canal-community-radio-show-front-follow-the-geography-trip-a-year-in-the-countryThe Gated Canal Community Radio Show – a fine collaborative effort from the labels Front & Follow and The Geography Trip; “…what are your top 5 pylons?”.

Bliss Aquamarine – considerations of the album courtesy of Kim Harten, ending on this note; “David Colohan of United Bible Studies contributes a soundtrack-esque piece that is stark yet beautiful, a sense of hope shining through the abandonment like flowers arising triumphantly through crumbling concrete.”

Evening of Light – further audiological gatherings and wanderings, including a dual visiting to The Quietened Bunker.

Terrascope – a consideration of the album amongst other admirable layered, considered writing;
“…the drifting drones of “Drakelow Tunnels” is music for ghosts. Created by Grey Frequency the track is stark and beautiful, you can almost see the figures that endlessly walk the abandoned corridors, lost souls frozen in time.”

shindig-magazine-issue-59-quietened-bunker-review-page-91Shindig! – wherein you can find The Quietened Bunker considered by Mr Paul Osborne, nestled amongst and alongside the likes of psych, garage, folk, exploratory synthesized work, the freewheelers of Psychomania, Ms Delia Derbyshire and fellow early electronic music investigators and instigators. You cannot say fairer than that indeed.

The Freakzone – courtesy of Mr Stuart Maconie and his nationally institutional show of musical curiousity.

Music Won’t Save You – amongst ongoing musical reflections from over the seas, courtesy of Mr Raffaello Russo.

The Crooked Button – broadcast amongst the experimental and subterranean delvings of this rather excellently monikered show.

you-the-night-the-music-radio-show-sine-fm-a-year-in-the-country

You, The Night & The Music – and a further dual broadcast to be found in the company of musical intriguements curated by Mr Matthew Handley.

mark-losing-the-sunday-experience-a-year-in-the-country

The Sunday Experience – a lyrical, flowing consideration; “…a most alluring waltzing orbital sorrowfully sighing in the starry outlands mournfully transmitting crystalline cosmic distress calls from forgotten far off outposts to its long since fallen creator as it observes the heavenly nightlights in states of gracefall dulling, diminishing and disappearing…”

Retromania – interlinked personal, historical wanderings by Mr Simon Reynolds (updated and somewhat extended since the last time it was mentioned around these parts).

Syndae 353 and 354 – a literal dual broadcast courtesy of work from The Quietened Bunker, in amongst all manner of electronic music journeying and roving.

Well, all I can say is thankyou and a tip of the hat (or two) to all involved in the above and also to Keith Seatman, Grey Frequency,
Panabrite,
Polypores,
Unknown Heretic, Listening Center,
 Time Attendant and
David Colohan for carrying out the explorations contained within the album.

Thankyou kindly good sirs and ladies.

And the album itself? Well…

The Quietened Bunker-Night Edition-all items-A Year In The CountryThe Quietened Bunker is an exploration of the abandoned and/or decommissioned Cold War installations which lie under the land and that would have acted as selectively populated refuges/control centres if the button was ever pushed; a study and reflection on these chimeric bulwarks and the faded but still present memory of associated Cold War dread, of which they are stalwart, mouldering symbols…

It can be found around these parts here and at Norman Records here.

The Quietened Bunker-Panabrite-A Year In The Country

They could be seen as once modern fortresses – reinforced concrete and blast doors replacing moats and stone battlements.

However, these subterranean fortresses would likely also have been places of entombment – somewhere that those who once ran the infrastructure and defence of the nation would watch the days pass as supplies dwindled and the inevitable time came when the air filters would give out, all long before the world would become habitable again.

Accompanying the main bunkers in the UK were a network of hundreds of small underground monitoring posts which would report on the size of an attack and the resulting fallout. Manned by volunteers, they were to be operational for just three weeks.

The intention was that these would form part of a network of civil defence and management, accompanied by government issued Protect and Survive leaflets/broadcasts that would have offered advice on how to protect home and hearth via little more than whitewashing windows as blast protection and forming a shelter by leaning mattresses against an inner wall of your house.

Time Attendant-Crafty Mechanics-The Quietened Bunker-A Year In The Country-with stroke

Looking back, such preparations can seem a reflection of some kind of madness or delusion in the collective consciousness and the halls of power – a tilting at windmills that was necessary to protect national psyches from the reality and aftermath of the sudden use and descending of mechanisms with almost indescribable destructive power.

Now it can all seem like a dream from another world, one where for a number of decades populations lived under the day-to-day threat of total annihilation and where millions was spent on this network of shelters and defences; preparations to allow fiddling once all had burned, such bunkers possibly being nearer to utilitarian national follies than fortresses.

Indeed, today they are as likely to be signposted tourist attractions as operative defences.

The Quietened Bunker reflects on these chimeric bulwarks and the faded but still present memory of associated Cold War dread, of which they are stalwart, mouldering symbols.

Audiological Transmission #25/52: Immersion – Coastline, Black Sky

Grey Frequency-Dusk and Dawn Editions-front covers-A Year In The CountryRevisitation #1.

Audiological exploration by Grey Frequency from the album Immersion.

I have something of a soft spot for Grey Frequency and their album that we sent out into the world; their music has a drifting, dreamlike quality intertwined with a quietly threatening ominousness.

Grey Frequency-Immersion-one off prints-A Year In The Country

Or to quote myself, when listening to their work I have found that “I was travelling and tunnelling through… subterranean passageways, accompanied by a sense of bliss become dread, of creaking, lurking monoliths…

Grey Frequency-Immersion-one off print-A Year In The Country-6Grey Frequency-Immersion-A Year In The Country

Or to quote myself further, it is music which “captures a sense of the lost futures and utopias which were once promised; those creaking monoliths are the sounds of the fading half-life of the utilitarian reinforced concrete structures which were once signposts and symbols of those futures and better days. This is music as collapsed edgeland industrial estates and wastelands, where the buzz of the pylons carry electricity to elsewhere, nolonger here and transmission centres have fallen silent.

Considerations of the album can be found at Heathen Harvest:
The whole thing looks as a discovery, a document, a forgotten memory or a souvenier – something you may find in an abandoned library, not in a record store…”

Week #24/52: Fractures Signals #3; A Dybukk’s Dozen Gathering (/Looping?) From Around These Parts

1973-A Gathering-A Year In The Country-4
File Under: Trails And Influences / Year 2 wanderings

So, out of curiousity and leading on from Fractures, I thought I would have a wander around the various wanderings and pathways of A Year In The Country, to peruse and investigate how many visitings to the very particular year of 1973 there have been…

Quite a few it would seem.

Along which lines, below is a dybukk’s dozen gathering of such things from around these parts.

1973-A Gathering-A Year In The Country-1

1) Day #87/365: Faded foundlings and Tender Vessels…
…still something of a favourite… home made craft-isms that are just a touch or two unsettling.

2) Week #2/52: The Tomorrow People in The Visitor, a Woolworths-esque filter and travels taken…
…ah, that theme tune and intro still seems to quietly disquiet me…

3) Day #343/365: Veils and Mirrors – forebearing, chanellings, rendings, listing of names…
I have something of a soft-spot for Glynis Jones Veils and Mirrors… It’s a gentle, unsettling (that word again) piece of music that seems as though it has pierced/rended a very particular veil and is quietly, allowing other shadows to come through…

4) Day #290/365: The first three minutes of Psychomania…
How to describe Psychomania? A sort of British carrier bag zombie version of a biker film? That’s somehow or other getting there. Soon(ish) to have a brush and scrub up via the BFI/Flipside, which is nice.

5) Day #271/365: The Spirit Of Dark And Lonely Water and a hop and skip to lost municipal paternalisms…
Well, I don’t think it would be right to gather such things and times without wandering towards this. Terrifying a generation for generations. One of Fractures “conspicuous junctures and signifiers” indeed.

1973-A Gathering-Morning-Way-Trader-Horne-Judy-Dyble-A-Year-In-The-Country-2

6) Day #267/365: Morning Way. Trader Horne.
Ah and there was me thinking “After The Spirit Of… it will be nice to enjoy a touch of early 1970s explorative acid/psych folk” but… “Dreaming strands of nightmare, Are sticking to my feet“. Very lovely work nonetheless.

7) Day #239/365: The jump cuts of hauntological antecedents…
As accidental, hauntological, otherly graphic design goes, this is pretty much there…

8) Day #160/365: Edgelands Report Documents; Cases #1a (return), #2a-5a.
Wanderings amongst the indomatibilities of nature via The Unofficial Countryside. Further Fractures “conspicuous junctures and signifiers“…

9) Day #195/365: World On A Wire; a curiously prescient Simulacron
Ah, nothing like a touch of glamour amongst the grit. Admittedly, it’s all zeros and ones smoke and mirrors…

10) Day #90/365: The Wickerman – the future lost vessels and artifacts of modern folklore
Well, another “I don’t think it would be right to gather such things and times without wandering towards this” moments. Something of a cultural behemoth (monolith? megalith?). Considerations and gatherings of future departed encasements… Fractures “conspicuous juncture and signifiers” number 3 around these parts it would seem.

1973-A Gathering-Peter-Reich-A-Book-Of-Dreams-Picador-1974-Kate-Bush-Cloudbusting-A-Year-In-The-Country-3

11) Week #3/52: I Still Dream Of Orgonon; A Book Of Dreams, the rarity of argent chains and moments of discovery…
And still dreaming of such things. May well also include Ms (Mrs?) Kate Bush’s fond farewell when she stepped upon the boards once again. Pop(ular) music as cinema indeed.

12) Week #6/52: Tomorrow’s People, further considerations of the past as a foreign country and hauntology away from its more frequent signifiers and imagery…
Light-catchery from a “Paradise Enclosed” (to quote Mr Rob Young / Electric Eden).

13) Day #303/365: Towards Tomorrow; a selection of cuttings from The Delian Mode, sonic maps, the corporation’s cubby holes and the life of an audiological explorer…
Wellsprings inspired from and via banshee howls… To end on Fractures “conspicuous juncture and signifiers” number 4.

A loop begins to form?

“Sorry sir, your name’s not on the list, you’re not getting in.”

“But I’m a plus one.”

“Hmmm.”: Day #278/365: Dybukk’s Dozen of 1973; A Gathering, Conflagration and Surveying…

From Fractures: A gathering of studies and explorations that take as their starting point the year 1973; a time when there appeared to be a schism in the fabric of things, a period of political, social, economic and industrial turmoil, when 1960s utopian ideals seemed to corrupt and turn inwards.

Audiological explorations by Circle/Temple, Sproatly Smith, Keith Seatman, Polypores, Listening Center, The British Space Group, The Hare And The Moon ft Alaska/Michael Begg, Time Attendant, The Rowan Amber Mill, A Year In The Country and David Colohan.

From The Quietened Bunker: An exploration of the abandoned and/or decommissioned Cold War installations which lie under the land and that would have acted as selectively populated refuges/control centres if the button was ever pushed; a study and reflection on these chimeric bulwarks and the faded but still present memory of associated Cold War dread, of which they are stalwart, mouldering symbols.

Audiological contents created by Keith Seatman, Grey Frequency, A Year In The Country, Panabrite, Polypores, Listening Center, Time Attendant, Unknown Heretic and David Colohan.

From No More Unto The Dance: A reflection of nightlife memories and the search for the perfect transportative electronic beat; a collection of reverberations that have fragmented with the passing of time.

The world in which this recording was made does still come alive at night but it is more likely to be the nocturnal foraging and wanderings of wildlife rather than in a low-ceilinged basement lit by a strobe light

The music presented here is the soundtrack to those basements, filtered through the looking glass of a life far removed from the bright lights and big city, the dressing up and dancing but a memory – a world far, far apart, almost that seems to belong only to the worn and aged pages of a faded, forgotten magazine.

From The Forest / The Wald: a study and collection of work that reflects on fragments and echoes of tales from the woodland and its folklore; greenwood rituals performed in the modern day, fantastical childhood rhymes, sylvan siren calls that tremble through tangles of branches, electronics pressed into the summoning of otherworldly arboreal creations unearthed amidst the creeping thickets and elegies to woodland intrustions, solitudes and seasons.

Audiological explorations by Bare Bones, Magpahi, Polypores, Time Attendant, David Colohan, Sproatly Smith, The Hare And The Moon ft Alaska, The Rowan Amber Mill, The Séance with Lutine, Cosmic Neighbourhood and A Year In The Country.

Week #16/52: The Quietened Village’s Library Of Loss; Volume #1/4a – (One corner of) A further library of loss…

Tyneham Ghost Village-Rodney Legg-A Year In The Country Tyneham village-Rodney Legg-A Year In The Country-4
File Under: Trails And Influences / Year 2 wanderings
Subsection: The Quietened Village’s Library Of Loss; Volume #1/4a

Well, as you may well have seen or noticed, around these parts we were recently(ish) involved in undertaking a project that took the name The Quietened Village which is …a study of and reflection on the lost, disappeared and once were homes and hamlets that have wandered off the maps or that have become shells of their former lives and times…

Or to (re)quote Folk Words, work that “…conjures roofless walls holding spirits not populations, skeletal spires pointing accusative fingers skywards, submerged shadows reflecting in water, crumbled remains wreathing a cliff’s base…”

All of which put me in mind of a collected library of loss which was previously gathered together around these parts in relation to the endeavours of Grey Frequency, whose work I said at the time tends to cause my mind to wander towards “…abandoned structures in the liminal areas where the edgelands meet rural landscapes…

Tyneham village-Rodney Legg-A Year In The CountryAll of which brings me to 50°37′23″N 2°10′08″W / 50.623°N 2.169°W / 50.623; -2.169 or to be precise the abandoned / ghost villageTyneham village.

Just before Christmas of 1943 Tyneham was commandeered by the military as it was to be used as part of firing range for training troops in the then near all-consuming conflagration.

The villagers of Tyneham were given 28 days to leave and were to never return, despite promises that they would one day be able to.

Apparently the last person to leave left this note on the church door:

“Please treat the church and houses with care; we have given up our homes where many of us lived for generations to help win the war to keep men free. We shall return one day and thank you for treating the village kindly.”

Tyneham-A Tribute-Dr Andrew Norman-A Year In The CountryWhich I find just heartbreaking.

A respectful tip of the hat to those who lived there across the generations.

On which note, I feel there is but little more to say, apart from to position a signpost or two:

Tyneham’s not-so-bricks-and-mortar home in the ether today here and amongst the not-so-ink-and-paper pages of an encyclopedia here. Mr Keith Seatman’s wanderings around those parts at Found Objects here.

The Quietened Village audiological explorations can be found here.

Day #362/365: Signals sent, signals received…

Trails and Influences: Electronic Ether. Case #51/52.

Audiological source: #1. #2. #3. #5. #6. #7.
Visual/audiological source: #1.

Grey Frequency-Immersion-one off print-A Year In The Country-6

1.

“…I had written about how the imagined landscape (Britain, in these cases) features so strongly in some strains of contemporary experimental folk music. Granted, this has been a central theme in folk since the 60s revival, but as I argue, the ease with which electronic manipulation can be applied these days has really influenced some of the more experimental folk works in the past decade or so. This heightened interplay of the ‘acoustic’ and electronic, and in a broader sense, between the rural and the urban, makes for a liminal artistic and imaginary field that is finding different forms of expression these days...”

Grey Frequency-Immersion-one off print-A Year In The Country-2

2.

…these concerns streak through the British visionary imagination, from painters such as Blake and Samuel Palmer to early 20th century romantic composers like Peter Warlock, 1960s pantheistic pranksters Incredible String Band and into the post-industrial underground of Coil, Psychic TV and Current 93. In the UK… this reanimation of the mythic countryside, underscored by liminal drones, residual folk forms and improvisation has found voice again recently in imprints like David Barker’s Folklore Tapes, Stephen Collin’s Stone Tape Recordings and Rob Lee’s Heretic’s Folk Club…”

Grey Frequency-Immersion-one off print-A Year In The Country-3

3.

…the whole thing looks as a discovery, a document, a forgotten memory or a souvenir – something you may find in an abandoned library, not in a record store…

Grey Frequency-Immersion-one off print-A Year In The Country

4.

…one imagines such editions being buried in time capsules or cemented in stone walls for future generations to mull over: sedimentary layers of history.

Grey Frequency-Immersion-one off print-A Year In The Country-4

5.

…uma vez mais trata-se de um exercício assombrado de field recordings, uma colagem psico-geográfica de sons que funciona como uma nocturna pintura aura…

Grey Frequency-Immersion-one off print-A Year In The Country-5

6.

Sounds must play for we don’t play with instruments, we play with soundtrack, with editing, filtering, reverberation. These games must use all kind of possibilities. It’s about transformation, the magic of transformation of sounds is important… It’s an animation, an animation of sound talk…  an urban source response to the dark moors and haunted woods mythology of modern folklorist music-makers…”

Grey Frequency-Immersion-one off print-A Year In The Country-7

7.

The sounds expose themselves, transform and meld producing a piece of music that is at times introspective, at times vociferous and in a constant state of resurgence and restless agitation…

Day #346/365: Audiological Reflections and Pathways #1; a library of loss

Grey Frequency-Immersion-A Year In The CountryTrails and Influences: Electronic Ether. Case #46/52.
Audiological Reflections and Pathways #1

If you should look closely amongst this particular year in the country you may well see that around these parts there has been activity which has involved the encasing of disturbances in the airwaves.

Audiological Reflections and Pathways is inspired by those particular encasings and the related work/creators of said work…

Along which lines, Grey Frequency.

When I think of the work of Grey Frequency, my mind tends to wander to abandoned structures in the liminal areas where the edgelands meet rural landscapes…

…which then tends to make me think of a particular section of bindings and encasings; books which deal with the ruins and collapsations of society – books/projects which encapture the spectres that such places and structures represent, the dreams and aspirations of times gone by…

…in a way such volumes/work could be seen to be hauntological visual documents of the traces and remains of those dreams…

Along which lines, a dybukk’s dozen of a library of loss…

Abandoned Futures-Tong Lam-A Year In The CountryAbandoned Futures: Tong Lam

There is something almost science fiction like about the phrase abandoned futures… but the potential glibness of that is undercut by a somewhat harsh (brutal?) reality…
Soviet Ghosts-Rebecca Litchfield-A Year In The CountrySoviet Ghosts: Rebecca Litchfield
Ether / binding. Spectres of Empire #1.
To a degree with such work, there is almost a sense of it dealing with the spectres and remains of battles between empires during the Cold War…
Detroit Disassembled-Andrew Moore-A Year In The CountryDetroit Disassembled: Andrew Moore

…a considerable body of such things deals with the collapsing/collapsed urban infrastructure of Western capitalism’s (high point?) dreams…

It’s interesting how once you step back onto these shores, such work gains a less harsh sense… here these buildings are not abandoned but named as heritage…

…or considered derelict and containing signs of maintenance rather than ruins – there is a sense that there may still be a reprieve or a future life for them…

I suppose in a way, if I was to think of the British equivalent of such bound publications then I would be more likely to wander along to work that documented the discarding of people and communities, particularly in the early 1980s, rather than documents of buildings – Chris Killip’s In Flagrante comes to mind in particular.

Visit that here, here and in facsimile form here.

Visit Illuminating Forgotten Heritage around these parts here.

Visit a bear’s ghosts around these parts here.

Visit Cold Geometries around these parts here.

Peruse “…broken signals, wraiths in the ether from lost futures and utopias which were once promised; the sounds of creaking monoliths and the fading half-life of utilitarian reinforced concrete structures which were once signposts and symbols of those futures and better days…” around these parts herehere and elswhere in the ether here.

Michael Tanner-Nine Of Swords-inside of Dusk and Dawn Editions-A Year In The Country

Nine of Swords was created by using nine tarot cards allocated to nine sonorous, percussive instruments which were played in the order of their drawing from the deck.

Its method of creation recalls the random cut-up literary techniques of William Burroughs or automatic writing and the resulting work is a 68 minute journey which is a balm to contemporary intensity of input.

No plug-ins or FX were used in the making of Nine of Swords; the music in the album was guided purely using the (non)choices of the turns of the cards.

Also available as a limited edition Night boxset and Day string bound booklet: see Day #245/365.

Day #331/365: Artifact #47/52; Hand of Stabs Black-Veined White CD album released – Dusk / Dawn Editions

The CDs are now sold out but the album is available to download at our Bandcamp page.

Hand of Stabs Black-Veined White CD album. Dusk Edition £10.00.  Dawn Edition £12.00
Hand of Stabs-Black-Veined White-Dusk and Dawn Editions-A Year In The Country

Audiological contents: Black-Veined White (68:33 minutes).

Available at our Artifacts Shop, our Discogs Audiological Archive and our  Bandcamp page.

Custom printed and hand-finished by A Year In The Country.

Black-Veined White takes as its starting point the eponymous butterfly which was last seen in the UK in Rochester, the area in which HoS live, work and explore, in the 1920s…

…it utilises precise textual descriptions of the Black-Veined White by L. Watson and M.J. Dallwitz alongside poetry that considers these ‘air wraiths’ by Giles Watson, to create a journey whereby Hand of Stab’s hidden drones and textures create a form of (non-electronic) electronica played on and summoned from the land and soil, a journey which captures and summons the spirit of these winged creatures that have now departed from our shores.

The resulting work is essentially a concept album about the extinction of the Black-Veined White in the British isles.

Black-Veined White and the work of Hand of Stabs is a very particular, otherly form of cultural exploration and inquiry whereby the aggressive transgression of the likes of COUM Transmissions, Throbbing Gristle and early Einstürzende Neubauten has evolved and spread deeply foraging roots to create work that is more pastoral in its themes but still very far from the centre of things.” (AYITC)

Hand of Stabs-Black-Veined White-Dusk and Dawn Editions-both opened-A Year In The Country
In their own words:

“Hand of Stabs, from the South East of England, are a three-man collective who’s work draws inspiration from their exploration of local, often forbidden, landmarks. They create improvised sound pieces which can be simultaneously uplifting, difficult and intense using both traditional and homebuilt instruments.

Sharing a love of the history and sacred past of Medway Towns and surrounding countryside, and inspired by regular, often night-time walks through these spaces, they are creating a series of soundworks evoking and celebrating their essence.

Audiological Research and Pathways; Case #7.
Audiological contents: Twalif X (50.51 minutes).

Twalif X is an audiological journey through one night; the album was recorded between dusk and dawn on the 12th/13th May 2014 in Robin Wood, Bears Wood, Knott Wood and on Eagle Crag.

All recordings were captured on one microphone and processed/mixed by N. Racker (samandtheplants / Supernatural Lancashire / Finders Keepers Records) and D. Orphan (Folklore Tapes / Pre-Cert Home Entertainment).

The imagery for the release was created by N. Racker & D. Orphan using photographs taken during the outing and spliced with original artwork by A Year In The Country.

…sometimes it is as though when listening to Twalif X that you are almost next to these explorers and you find that you have travelled with them to the otherly, darker corners of the woodlands and landscape. A work that is both calm and quietly unsettling, experimental with bursts of folkloric melody that appears with the coming of the dawn…” (AYITC).

The song Molly Leigh Of The Mother Town draws from Ms She Rocola’s own personal folklore and that of her home town; childhood experiences of chasing her playmates around Molly Leigh’s grave and the rhymes which accompanied such games. It is an audiological conjuring of hazy, sleepy small-hours memories and dreams from those times.

Burn The Witch’s story is interconnected with those childhood memories and is in part inspired by formative viewings of late-night folk-horror films from in front of and behind the sofa.

Here at A Year In The Country, we are proud to be able to send these stories out into the world.

The story and mythology of Molly Leigh can be investigated further here.

She Rocola-Ellen Terry beetlewing dress-Zoe Lloyd-Mrs Nettleship-A Year In The CountryVictorian wet-plate photograph of She Rocola by Zoe LLoyd.

Ms She Rocola’s dress is inspired by a beetle wing dress made for Ellen Terry in the 19th century. The dress was originally designed and made by Mrs Nettleship…

The intention was to make the original dress “…look as much like soft chain armour as I could and yet have something that would give the appearance of the scales of a serpent… (it is) sewn all over with real green beetle wings, and a narrow border in Celtic designs, worked out in rubies and diamonds“.
