A Year In The Country Artifacts / The British Library Sound Archive

File under: Artifacts / Preserved For Posterity

Well, here’s a nice thing…

There are physical copies of all the A Year In The Country audiological artifacts now present and correct at The British Library’s Sound Archive.

(You see that modernist building? Well, if you look really closely you may just be able to see a Night, Dawn etc Edition or two peaking out…)

If you should not know, The British Library is a nationally owned building/institution in the centre of London (next door to St Pancras railway station to be precise), that is visitable by the public, wherein can be found copies of all books and periodicals published in the UK.

(For those times when you just can’t find anything to read / Tomorrow’s World looks at the latest in home storage systems.)

Alongside that, they also selectively archive music, field recordings, film etc, which is where the A Year In The Country artifacts come in…

Over the years they have amassed a couple or more records etc or to quote the British Library:

“Over 1 million discs, 185,000 tapes, and many other sound and video recordings.”

A crate diggers delight indeed.

At the time of writing there are over 625 kilometres of shelves in the British Library and that’s apparently growing by 12 kilometres each year (that would be 388 / 7.5 miles in old money then).

Blimey.

the-british-library-a-year-in-the-country-2
(Rumours of DJ Shadow trying to “accidentally” get locked in here over night have been widely exagerated.)

There’s a lovely video of the sound archive by Wire magazine, where Nathan Budzinski interviews Popular Music Curator Andy Linehan, Audio Engineer/Conservation specialist Will Prentice, and Wildlife Sounds Curator Cheryl Tipp. Visit that here.

(As an aside, the Wire footage of the sound archive shelves makes me think of the classic Twilight Zone episode where a chap who loves just being left to read find himself all alone amongst the bounties of a library in a post-apocalyptic world – well, it reminds me of that until the twist at the end of the episode.)

You can search the Sound And Moving Image Catalogue here.

If you should find yourself around central London, you can visit the Sound Archive in person and listen to items; details here. The British Library’s main home in the ether is here, the Sound Archive here.

If it should be of interest to you, below is a list of all the A Year In The Country released items and editions in the archive:

This is the first audiological research and pathways case study constructed solely by
A Year In The Country.

Image E3-A Year In The Country

In contrast to the telling of tales from the wald/wild wood in times gone by, today the stories that have become our cultural folklore we discover, treasure, pass down, are informed and inspired by, are often those that are transmitted into the world via the airwaves, the (once) cathode ray machine in the corner of the room, the zeros and ones that flitter around the world and the flickers of (once) celluloid tales.

They take root in our minds and imagination via the darkened rooms of modern-day reverie, partaken of in communal or solitary seance.

The Transmission Resonances volumes of audiological constructs will take as their wellspring such stories; focusing on those tales that continue to resonate over time, which have gained layers of meaning as the years have passed, that express and/or explore some sense of otherly pastoralism and which skirt the edgelands.

From that first fount, the plan is for these volumes to wander through their own particular journey, pushing aside the brambles and travelling the pathways that they will; to consider the stories of the patterns beneath the plough and the pylons across the land.

Transmission Resonances: Volume 1 takes as its wellhead the continuing reverberations of the 1969 cathode ray version of Alan Garner’s The Owl Service.

It pushes open the attic door from whence the scratching descends and travels to places that surprised, intrigued and even delighted our good selves when it was being shaped on our own particular audiological potters wheels.

Night Edition: £25.00.

Michael Tanner-Nine Of Swords-inside of Dusk and Dawn Editions-A Year In The Country

Nine of Swords was created by using nine tarot cards allocated to nine sonorous, percussive instruments which were played in the order of their drawing from the deck.

Its method of creation recalls the random cut-up literary techniques of William Burroughs or automatic writing and the resulting work is a 68 minute journey which is a balm to contemporary intensity of input.

No plug-ins or FX were used in the making of Nine of Swords; the music in the album was guided purely using the (non)choices of the turns of the cards.

Also available as a limited edition Night boxset and Day string bound booklet: see Day #245/365.

Day #331/365: Artifact #47/52; Hand of Stabs Black-Veined White CD album released – Dusk / Dawn Editions

The CDs are now sold out but the album is available to download at our Bandcamp page.

Custom printed and hand-finished by A Year In The Country.

Black-Veined White takes as its starting point the eponymous butterfly which was last seen in the UK in Rochester, the area in which HoS live, work and explore, in the 1920s…

…it utilises precise textual descriptions of the Black-Veined White by L. Watson and M.J. Dallwitz alongside poetry that considers these ‘air wraiths’ by Giles Watson, to create a journey whereby Hand of Stab’s hidden drones and textures create a form of (non-electronic) electronica played on and summoned from the land and soil, a journey which captures and summons the spirit of these winged creatures that have now departed from our shores.

The resulting work is essentially a concept album about the extinction of the Black-Veined White in the British isles.

Black-Veined White and the work of Hand of Stabs is a very particular, otherly form of cultural exploration and inquiry whereby the aggressive transgression of the likes of COUM Transmissions, Throbbing Gristle and early Einstürzende Neubauten has evolved and spread deeply foraging roots to create work that is more pastoral in its themes but still very far from the centre of things.” (AYITC)

Hand of Stabs-Black-Veined White-Dusk and Dawn Editions-both opened-A Year In The Country
In their own words:

“Hand of Stabs, from the South East of England, are a three-man collective who’s work draws inspiration from their exploration of local, often forbidden, landmarks. They create improvised sound pieces which can be simultaneously uplifting, difficult and intense using both traditional and homebuilt instruments.

Sharing a love of the history and sacred past of Medway Towns and surrounding countryside, and inspired by regular, often night-time walks through these spaces, they are creating a series of soundworks evoking and celebrating their essence.

Grey Frequency-Dusk and Dawn Editions-opened-A Year In The Country copy
Immersion was the first Audiological Research and Pathways case study that was sent forth at
A Year In The Country and I am pleased and indeed proud to be able to return to it.

Not least because it gives me the chance to return to the recordings contained myself. This is transportative music, something that sends and allows my mind to travel elsewhere; it is meditative and quietly unsettling.

The phrase that comes to mind when I think of Grey Frequency’s work is broken signals; a scanning or overview of the ghosts in the airwaves, transmissions discovered via edgeland explorations and forays…

…when I listen to Immersion it feels like a capturing of activity hidden deep below the surface of things, the inexorable power of nature and it’s movement/force against it’s own edifices and those of civilisation over many years; a capturing of the sound of those self same rending and collapsing into the below.

Lovely stuff.” (AYITC)

Audiological Research and Pathways; Case #7.
Audiological contents: Twalif X (50.51 minutes).

Twalif X is an audiological journey through one night; the album was recorded between dusk and dawn on the 12th/13th May 2014 in Robin Wood, Bears Wood, Knott Wood and on Eagle Crag.

All recordings were captured on one microphone and processed/mixed by N. Racker (samandtheplants / Supernatural Lancashire / Finders Keepers Records) and D. Orphan (Folklore Tapes / Pre-Cert Home Entertainment).

The imagery for the release was created by N. Racker & D. Orphan using photographs taken during the outing and spliced with original artwork by A Year In The Country.

…sometimes it is as though when listening to Twalif X that you are almost next to these explorers and you find that you have travelled with them to the otherly, darker corners of the woodlands and landscape. A work that is both calm and quietly unsettling, experimental with bursts of folkloric melody that appears with the coming of the dawn…” (AYITC).

The song Molly Leigh Of The Mother Town draws from Ms She Rocola’s own personal folklore and that of her home town; childhood experiences of chasing her playmates around Molly Leigh’s grave and the rhymes which accompanied such games. It is an audiological conjuring of hazy, sleepy small-hours memories and dreams from those times.

Burn The Witch’s story is interconnected with those childhood memories and is in part inspired by formative viewings of late-night folk-horror films from in front of and behind the sofa.

Here at A Year In The Country, we are proud to be able to send these stories out into the world.

The story and mythology of Molly Leigh can be investigated further here.

She Rocola-Ellen Terry beetlewing dress-Zoe Lloyd-Mrs Nettleship-A Year In The CountryVictorian wet-plate photograph of She Rocola by Zoe LLoyd.

Ms She Rocola’s dress is inspired by a beetle wing dress made for Ellen Terry in the 19th century. The dress was originally designed and made by Mrs Nettleship…

The intention was to make the original dress “…look as much like soft chain armour as I could and yet have something that would give the appearance of the scales of a serpent… (it is) sewn all over with real green beetle wings, and a narrow border in Celtic designs, worked out in rubies and diamonds“.
